Our next bit to practise is kicking! We need to make sure that when our little ones are kicking, they are kicking correctly. An inappropriate bend of the knee can make a good swimming forward kick into a kick that makes you travel backwards in the pool! Most frustrating for our little ones. It's also not fun being the one in the pool that tires their hardest kicking and ends up going nowhere!
We are here to promote swimming and making it fun and enjoyable! Lets see how below!
I do hope you are all enjoying your summer holidays!
Here are a few things we suggest you do in the bath and or pool to keep those little swimmers swimming!
Make sure you are watching your child the whole time they are in or near water, have fun- and keep safe this summer!
Starting with- BUBBLES!
1) Get blowing those bubbles! What we are aiming for in the end is for your child to be able to put their face fully in the water looking at the bottom of the swimming pool whilst blowing bubbles and refusing water going up their nose. We must break this process down into bite sized pieces for our little ones!
We start with just showing them what we want them to do. Put your mouth in the water and blow those bubbles. Make a noise while you are doing it and start before your mouth is in the water so they can see what you are doing. Put a watering can of water over your head whilst you are smiling and blowing the water, it shows them it is fun and easy! Let them do it to you! Then encourage them to do it to themselves! Smiles all the time!
Then once they are happy to do this we expand to mouth and nose in the water. It is imperative that your child is in control of this, you encourage your child, use bribery whatever works for you both but do not force them into this! You will only make them refuse to do this for months! Maybe make a game and get them to speak to the fishes whilst reaching to a toy under the water.
Repetition is key! Make it fun! Always do the activity yourself to show them, you are their role model!
We expand this further by a push off the side to you while their face is in the water. They start with their faces in looking at the bottom of the pool and push off the side keeping their faces in until they get to you. It's called a push and glide. Have a look at some videos, it is very fun to practise this with your little ones in the swimming pool!
Always stay safe in the pool and if you are not sure about something ask a swimming teacher!
Next activity will be posted in a few days!
